Compress and Resize GIFs to a Size Limit

Many shops, marketplaces and forums reject GIFs over a set file size. Choose your GIF, pick the maximum size and, if you like, a new width. The tool tries the gentlest changes first, so you get the best-looking GIF that still fits. It all happens on your device, so the GIF is never uploaded.

Step 1: Choose your GIF

Loading the tool…One moment — files never leave your device

Step 2: Choose the size you need

The tool keeps as much quality as it can: it first saves only the parts that change between frames, then uses fewer colors, and only then makes the GIF smaller in pixels if you allow it. Transparent areas become white.

Step 3: Optimize GIF

Choose a GIF in step 1 first.

Step 4: Download your new files

Your new files will appear here after you press “Optimize GIF”.

How to use it

  1. Choose a GIF. Its file size, width and height, number of frames and play time are shown.
  2. Pick the maximum file size (500 KB to 10 MB, or any other size) and, if needed, a new width such as 800 or 600 pixels.
  3. Leave 'make it smaller in pixels' on to let the tool shrink the GIF when fewer colors are not enough; tick 'keep only every second frame' only if you accept less smooth motion.
  4. Press Optimize GIF and download the result, named after your file with its new width.

Questions

How does it keep the quality?
It tries the gentlest changes first: saving only the parts that change between frames, treating near-identical areas as unchanged, then using fewer colors. Only if that is not enough does it make the GIF smaller in pixels, choosing the largest size that still fits.
Will the result really be under my platform's limit?
The tool counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and 500 KB as 500,000 bytes, the smaller of the two common definitions, so the file fits whichever way your platform counts. If the size cannot be reached, you get the smallest version found and a warning.
What if my GIF is already small enough?
If it is already under the size you chose and you did not pick a smaller width, the original file is given back unchanged, because saving it again would only lose quality.
Does it keep the speed and looping?
Yes. Frame timing and looping are kept. If you allow keeping only every second frame, the remaining frames are shown longer so the animation lasts the same time.
Does it keep transparency?
No. Transparent areas become white.
